Edibles 101: Cooking with CBD

CBD oils can be a great opportunity for those suffering from chronic pain or anxiety. Even so, not all people like the taste or oily texture that comes from having to take a dosage of the rich earthy flavored extract. That’s where edibles can save the day! 

By making your own CBD enriched goodies, you will be able to control not only the dosage that works best for your individual needs but also the quality of ingredients to get the most health benefits from your cooking. 

Tips about Edibles:

CBD typically evaporates at temperatures higher than 160-180°C(320-356°F). Bake goods at lower temperatures to maintain the absolute essence of CBD in your food.

Store it correctly – if you don’t want the quality of this product to degrade, then keep it in a cool and dark location. CBD oil is UV light and heat sensitive.

Always start out with small batches until the dosage amount can be altered for consistency. Different dosages affect people differently, and likewise, the serving size of a food item can vary too.  

How much CBD oil to add depends on how many servings you’re cooking up. Simply multiply the recommended dosage by the number of servings. For instance, if you’re making a batch of a dozen brownies, then multiply the recommended dosage by 12 and add that to your recipe. So if the recommended dosage is 2 drops, add 24 drops into the recipe. 

When cooking with CBD, the most important thing to keep in mind is that CBD is lipophilic – a fancy word for “fat soluble.” On the other side of the coin, CBD is also hydrophobic – another fancy word that means it won’t dissolve in water. So it’s important that you don’t just throw some CBD isolate in your soup, or it could end up getting flushed out and do you no good.

 Using CBD in Butter:

If you want to stick with butter for your recipe, you can easily use CBD to make your own butter. You can make as much CBD butter as you want and save it for adding to your favorite recipes.

Simply melt some butter in a saucepan, add CBD isolate, and simmer. CBD starts to evaporate above 320°F, so use lower cooking temperatures. A good rule of thumb is your butter should be bubbling a little, but not be at a rolling boil. Let it simmer for 10 minutes or so, then pour the butter into a clean glass container and put it in the fridge until you’re ready to cook with it. The same method can also be used with any kind of vegetable oil such as coconut oil, olive oil, or even peanut butter.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars

Prep time: 15 mins 
Bake time: 20-25 mins 
Servings: 16

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup CBD infused vegetable oil
1/3 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or crushed blocks
First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Oil the baking pan and set aside.
In a mixing bowl, add the CBD-infused oil, egg, peanut butter, brown sugar and vanilla extract and blend smooth.
Add flour and blend until fully incorporated and then pour it into to oiled baking pan. 
Pour this dough into the pre-greased pan and spread evenly. Add chocolate chips over the top and cook for 20-25 minutes in preheated oven.

Check whether it’s done by using a fork. If it comes out clean, take the pan from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool for 30 minutes then cut into bars and enjoy!
